Freight forwarder, in English, refers to a company that organizes shipments of cargo on behalf of its clients, facilitating the transportation of goods from one place to another. It offers a range of services, such as booking cargo space, preparing necessary documentation, handling customs clearance, and coordinating with various carriers to ensure smooth delivery.
A freight forwarder acts as an intermediary between shippers (consignors) and carriers (such as airlines, shipping lines, or railways). Their role is to manage the complexities of international shipping on behalf of their clients, often dealing with multiple parties like customs brokers, freight carriers, and logistics service providers.
Within the logistics industry, the terms "shipping agent" and "freight forwarder" are sometimes used interchangeably, but they might have distinct differences based on their operational scope. Generally, a shipping agent operates within a specific port or region, handling local administrative tasks, such as vessel scheduling or assisting with cargo operations at the port. In contrast, a freight forwarder manages the entire logistics chain, from origin to destination, even across different regions or countries.
Cargo handler and freight forwarder are not the same. A cargo handler is responsible for loading, unloading, and moving cargo within a terminal or warehouse, focusing on physical handling tasks. A freight forwarder, on the other hand, manages the entire shipping process, including booking, documentation, and coordination with various shipping parties.
